Introduce yourself.
My name is Tomisin Adepeju. I am a film-maker and curator. I have directed several short films and I am working on my first feature with Ken Loach’s Sixteen Films & BFI. I am also the founder of DAILIES, a screening and event series where I curate film programmes and workshops. You’ll always almost find me in a grey or dark blue double-breasted suit, occasionally wearing sunglasses.
When was the first time you wore black tie?
I think it was in university in my second year and it was for an event called Founders Ball. My friends and I had never worn black tie so we all tried to help each other out as best we could. I remember the feeling of wearing one for the first time; invincible, confident, ready for anything,
What is your best memory wearing black tie?
Definitely my wedding day. I knew exactly what I wanted to wear so my best man (Gerald Onuorah, founder of Collarbone) and I spent months putting together the perfect attire for the occasion. I wore tails then changed into a dinner jacket for the evening of dancing and celebrations.
Is there a particular black tie accessory you cherish?
I wouldn’t say there’s a particular accessory I cherish but in the past few years I have been wearing Shirt Stays by Sharp & Dapper and it’s honestly been a transformative experience. And it does exactly what it says, the shirt stays in place without any need for re-tucking, it’s absolutely wonderful.
What is your favourite choice of footwear?
I always say that there was my life before opera pumps and my life after it – I wore them on my wedding day and I have not looked back. There is an elegance it exudes that has really elevated my attire.
Silk or cotton socks?
Silk socks, again there is an elegance that’s so palpable every time I wear it. Beautifully compliments my opera pumps.
How did you learn to tie your bow tie?
My learning is still a work in progress to be honest. I need to book in some sessions with Mickael.
What was the last occasion you wore black tie for?
A friend of mine won a BAFTA so he threw a party to celebrate this incredible achievement.
Your ideal black tie night?
I do love parties and premieres but my ideal night would be dinner with very close friends and family somewhere in town where we can have profound discussions about art, music and cinema.
Who do you consider a black tie icon nowadays?
Two names come to mind, one close to home, the other a titan of the cinema. The first is my best friend and undoubtedly the most stylish man I know, Gerald Onuorah. His style is so distinct and effortless, a big inspiration.
The second is the indomitable Cary Grant. One of the most gifted actors of his generation and a very dapper and elegant man.
How do you feel when you wear black tie?
To reiterate the feeling I had when I first wore black tie; invincible, confident, ready for anything.
