And Finally…
Colman Domingo
Not your traditional black tie outfit, this one is definitely more on the fashionable side. In my opinion, what makes this outfit work (even if I wouldn’t wear it) is the heavy accessories worn by Colman, complementing the metal buttons on the jacket. I feel like the outfit would have been more sophisticated with a standard bow tie, but hey ho. Needless to say that I really appreciate the cut of the trousers, creating a dramatic 70s-inspired silhouette.
Sterling K Brown
Another designer outfit, this time with quite dubious styling. The extension of the lapel beyond the coat itself is an odd choice, it doesn’t make much sense visually. The chest pocket is unusually low and this impacts the whole silhouette of the coat. The bow tie is also a cheap pre not tied bow tie, my nemesis. If this jacket had been a more classic design, this outfit would have been much better!
Tatanka Means
Tatanka wears quite a cool outfit with a great selection of accessories and the best hairstyle of the evening. The only aspect of the attire I don’t like is how tight the jacket is, he looks incredibly uncomfortable. When wearing black tie, comfort is key, you want to be able to move around without looking like you borrowed a jacket 2 sizes too small!
Yancey Red Corn
Yancey is wearing a navy blue dinner suit, a white dinner shirt with studs, a self tie bow tie and patent leather shoes. The addition of the Native American accessories is a really welcome splash of colours, lifting the outfit to great heights.
Yorgos Lanthimos
Another thing I don’t understand about people wearing evening wear is choosing to wear a tie instead of a bow tie. It’s not a funeral, it’s a party, you must wear a bow tie. On top of that, the wrap of the jacket is way too high, making him look like a fridge with a head -and a tie-.
Finneas
It all could work on paper: a dark navy dinner suit, well cut, with the right shirt and bow tie. The big downside is actually the choice of fabric which seems to be creasing excessively. When choosing your dinner suit, make sure the fabric you wear will tailor well!
Ke Huy Quan
Here we are, finally someone showing how to do modern black tie in a tasteful way. The burgundy jacket with the black satin contrast lapels is a subtle design that works perfectly for evening wear. The black trousers work well, although they could be quite a bit longer, the bow tie is a good design for him, dropping towards the torso and the glasses are an amazing way to create harmony with the jacket choice. I wish the bottom part of the outfit would have been more carefully thought about but overall a good example of black tie!
